Kaspersky is reportedly closing its US-based division and laying off employees, according to a Zero Day report. The closure is set to begin on July 20, with employee layoffs commencing soon after.
This move comes after the US government’s decision to ban Kaspersky products. While Kaspersky initially intended to challenge the ban in court, the recent news of layoffs suggests a change in plans.
In a statement, Kaspersky expressed regret over the closure, citing the US legal requirements as making business operations in the country unviable. Fewer than 50 employees will be affected by the shutdown, and some have already started receiving severance packages.
The US government’s ban on Kaspersky stems from concerns over the company’s alleged links to the Russian government and its access to sensitive data on computers. The ban extends to software updates, resales, and licensing of Kaspersky products. Organizations and businesses relying on Kaspersky are advised to find alternative anti-malware solutions.
